8th Annual Translational Research Conference for the Management of NCLs
November 20-22, 2024 | Lombard, Chicago
We are excited to announce that the 8th annual Translational Research Conference for the Management of NCLs will take place in Lombard, Chicago, from November 20-22, 2024. This prestigious event brings together an exceptional group of scientists, physicians, pharmaceutical representatives, and Batten disease foundations dedicated to advancing the understanding and treatment of Batten disease (also known as neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis or NCL).
This conference is an invitation-only gathering, specifically tailored for elite researchers and scientists. The sessions dive deeply into the intricacies of brain science related to Batten disease, unlike the family-oriented science sessions at the BDSRA summer conference, where presentations are more accessible to a general audience. Here, our focus is on fostering high-level collaboration among those actively working in NCL and related fields. With limited space and a carefully selected roster of attendees, this conference is structured to maximize productive discussion, collaboration, and innovation.
A Unique Approach to Scientific Dialogue
Our goal is for roughly half of the presentations to concentrate directly on Batten disease research. The remaining presentations feature work in other scientific areas where discoveries could cross-apply to Batten research. This unique structure has spurred invaluable conversations, recruited new researchers to the field, and led to novel approaches and clinical trials aimed at treating Batten disease.
A Collaborative Legacy
The Translational Research Conference originated in 2012 or 2013 in Bethesda, Maryland. Founded by Chris, his father Nick, and dedicated advocates like Dr. Dave Pearce, Tracy Van Houtan and Dave Kennicott from Noah’s Hope / Hope for Bridget Foundation, Joe & Nikki Vigil from Mary Payton Miracle Foundation, Sharon King from Taylor’s Tale Foundation, Tony & Katie Ferrandino from Drew Hope Research Foundation, and Craig & Charolette Benson from Beyond Batten Disease Foundation, along with a small team of scientists and family foundations, this conference initially started as a one-day “workshop.” Approximately 30 attendees would listen to three scientists present their research, followed by open discussion sessions—a format that has grown and evolved tremendously over the years. Now, as we approach our 8th conference, we reflect on the event’s incredible journey from its origins to becoming a highly regarded scientific forum for NCL.
Where Does the Support Go?
One hundred percent of the sponsorship funds for this conference support the travel, accommodations, and meals for invited speakers, as well as conference room rentals, AV equipment, and attendee meals. Any remaining funds will be saved to help fund next year’s conference in 2026.
Gratitude for Our Sponsors and Supporters
We are profoundly grateful to the Batten family foundations, research labs, pharmaceutical companies, and all who sponsor this event. Their contributions ensure we can provide a world-class platform for collaboration and progress toward solving Batten disease. Together, we will host this critical two-and-a-half-day conference from Thursday, November 20, to Saturday, November 22, 2024, in Chicago.
This conference embodies our shared hope and commitment, paving the way for groundbreaking discoveries and, ultimately, a cure for Batten disease.
